A taxi driver has been charged with sexually abusing and trying to rape a Lakeview woman who fell asleep in the back of his cab Sunday morning, according to police.

Mustafa Dikbas | Chicago Police Dept

Mustafa Dikbas, 36, of North Center is charged with felony attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault; felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse; felony kidnapping; and theft, police said in a statement issued late Thursday.

Dikbas’ taxi association, aware that he was wanted by police, alerted detectives on Tuesday night that his cab’s GPS had become active near Irving Park Road and Western Avenue, according to a source. 19th (Town Hall) District officers rushed to the area and conducted a brief search that resulted in Dikbas’ arrest.

As CWBChicago first reported on Sunday, a Lakeview woman told police that she fell asleep in the back of a taxi cab and awoke to find her driver sexually abusing her in the 3800 block of North Recreation Drive around 7 a.m. The victim fought the man off, suffering injuries to her knees, and he fled the scene with her phone and wallet, according to her report.

Cops secured the assailant’s taxi number by reviewing surveillance video, but the cab’s GPS had not been active for nearly four hours prior to the attack, preventing them from making an immediate arrest in the case, according to a police source.

Dikbas is due in bond court on Friday afternoon.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
