A man was hit on the head with a rock and robbed Friday morning near Belmont and Racine. Later in the day, a would-be bank robber was caught in the act near Boystown. Here are the details:
• Around 9 a.m. on Friday, a man was hit over the head with a rock by a robber who then took the victim’s wallet in an alley behind the 1200 block of West Belmont. The victim said the offender was a black man with a tattoo of an eagle on his left hand who stands about 5’10” tall and weighs 185 pounds. The robber, who was last seen heading westbound in the north alley, was wearing a black cap, brown jacket, blue jeans, and black gym shoes, according to police. The victim was treated for a cut to his head.
• Cops were on-scene almost immediately after a teller activated a silent alarm at Fifth Third Bank, 3601 North Broadway, on Friday evening. Officers arrested a man who approached a teller and indicated that he had a firearm during a hold-up attempt around 5:30 p.m. Investigators from the FBI-Chicago police bank robbery task force were called to the scene. Charges were awaiting approval on Saturday morning, according to police.
