Detectives today issued a community alert in which they officially connect two recent robberies near Clark-Diversey to the same offender.
In both cases, a lone gunman has entered businesses, engaged the employees in conversation, and then displayed a handgun in his waistband, police said. The offender announces a robbery, takes the employee’s personal property as well as proceeds from the business, and flees.
The offender is a black man between 40- and 50-years-old who stands 5’9” to 6-feet tall and weighs about 160 pounds, police said. He was last seen wearing a gray and black hoodie and a dark colored North Face hat with red lettering.
The first hold-up was reported at 5:40 p.m. on March 10 in the 2900 block of North Clark.
The offender walked into Leg Appeal and took the employee’s cell phone along with the store’s cash and laptop before escaping southbound on Clark Street, police said at the time. Pings from the victim’s cellphone indicated that the man got as far as Deming and Clark before the phone stopped transmitting, according to police.
Then, around 4:45 p.m. on March 18, the same man pulled off a similar robbery at JAYNE boutique, 2707 North Clark. Once again, the man was last seen walking southbound on Clark Street from the robbery scene.
Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Area North detectives at (312) 744-8263.
