Police on Monday released a short video of a suspect wanted in connection with the beating of a suburban man on the lakefront last Saturday evening.
The attack happened on the lakefront bike path at 1299 North Lake Shore drive at 6:30 p.m., police said today. Police previously said the attack happened in the 800 block of North Lake Shore Drive.
Alderman Brian Hopkins (2) drew attention to the victim’s case last week in a comment he submitted to Second City Cop, a blog that focuses on Chicago Police Department issues.
Hopkins last week said the beating victim is a 21-year-old man from the suburbs who was leaving the lakefront after spending a day at the beach with his girlfriend. As the couple walked, they were approached by a group of offenders, one of whom punched the victim in the face, causing him to fall and strike his head on the pavement.
The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Hopkins said. The man was released from intensive care late last week.
Despite the nature of the man’s injuries, no police report was filed until Wednesday evening. Hopkins said the man’s family reached out to him in exasperation after their attempts to get an “investigatory response” failed.
A CPD spokesman last week confirmed that a police report about the Lake Shore Drive attack was not filed until Wednesday afternoon or evening. “We are conducting a formal review of the incident,” the spokesman said.
Anyone with information about the lakefront incident is asked to call Area Central detectives at 312-747-8380.
