A 21-year-old Uptown man is in critical condition after being shot Monday evening in the 1300 block of West Lawrence, police said.

The man was walking down the sidewalk when an unknown gunman drove by on a bicycle and opened fire around 6:35 p.m., according to police.

Witnesses described the offender as a black man wearing a black and red hoodie. He was last seen riding his bike down Beacon Street.

Police said the victim suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper back. He is being treated at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Monday’s victim is the eighth person to be shot in Uptown this year. By comparison, thirteen people had been shot at this point last year, and nineteen had been shot during the same period in 2016.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
