Police officers who responded to a call of shots fired near Belmont Harbor early Sunday arrested a man nearby for carrying a gun in his backpack, according to a CPD spokesman.

Officers received several calls of shots fired and men shooting a gun into the water near Belmont Harbor, 3200 North Lake Shore Drive, around 2 a.m.

Police searched the area and found 29-year-old Brian Ambrose just north of Diversey Harbor a few minutes later. Officers stopped Ambrose for being in the park after hours and asked for his permission to search his backpack, police said.

Instead of giving or denying permission, Ambrose began to reach into the backpack himself, the spokesman said. Officers stopped him from reaching into the bag and then saw a handgun inside the backpack, according to police.

Ambrose was arrested and has been charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon on park property and being on park property after hours. Judge Michael Clancy released him on a recognizance bond.

Ambrose has not been charged with firing the handgun.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
