A 21-year-old man was shot in an alley behind a popular River North nightlife district Saturday morning, police said. Two people have been detained for questioning.
Several police officers in the area of State and Hubbard called out “shots fired” at 4:39 a.m. as the victim, shot in the left shin, ran out of the alley onto State Street. The injured man then turned toward Hubbard Street, where he fell to the ground.
A Chicago police officer applied a tourniquet to slow the man’s bleeding while they waited for an ambulance to arrive. The victim was reported in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Two shell casings were found in the alley behind 11 West Illinois Street. Officers reported seeing a man and a woman running from the scene. The two were later taken into custody at Dearborn and Jackson in the Loop.
The shooting took place at virtually the same spot where suburban software executive Mike Beedle was stabbed to death during a robbery at 2:15 a.m. on March 23rd.
Prosecutors say 58-year-old Gino Bassett Sr saw Beedle holding money in his hand outside of a bar and then followed Beedle as he entered the alley to get to his parked car.

Surveillance cameras captured images of Basset pushing Beedle as the two entered the alley, prosecutors said. Seconds later, Beedle was seen walking out of the alley, holding his neck, and collapsing at the corner of State and Hubbard. He died minutes later.
The murder case continues to work its way through the court system.
Increasing Violence
The alley where Beedle was killed and this morning’s victim was shot is located on Chicago Police Department beat #1831, which covers much of the River North entertainment district. CWBChicago reported this week that the beat has become the #1 spot for robberies in the entire city of Chicago.
Shootings are also on the rise in the area, we reported.
This morning’s shooting was the third in about a week for River North.
Two people were shot in in the neighborhood within 30 minutes early last Saturday—one in the 400 block of West Ontario and the other in the 600 block of North LaSalle.
The Near North community area, which includes River North, logged four shootings in the past week. A 42-year-old man was in good condition after receiving a gunshot wound to the back on Tuesday evening in the 500 block of West Chestnut. The man was on the sidewalk around 8 p.m. when shots were fired. One of the bullets struck the man in the upper right side of his back, police said. Two shell casings were found nearby.
