A 17-year-old boy stole a Mercedes while its owner removed items from the trunk near the Magnificent Mile on Tuesday evening, police said. When the owner tried to stop the teen from stealing his car, the offender accelerated and dragged the victim for a short distance, then struck a pedestrian, a bicyclist, and several parked vehicles, according to police.

The carjacking started at 7:05 p.m. while the Mercedes idled in the 100 block of East Huron. Police said the carjacker bailed out of the car near Grant Park and ran from officers. He was soon arrested in the 300 block of South Lake Shore Drive.

Prosecutors charged the teen with one felony count of vehicular hijacking. He is due in juvenile court today.

Police originally said the carjacking took place in the 1000 block of North Rush Street.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
