A seemingly professional burglary crew that tore through the walls of two Lakeview businesses to access the inventory storage room of a cellular store early Thursday escaped with a “significant” amount of electronics, according to Chicago police and sources.

The burglars entered a shop two doors north of the Sprint store at 2850 North Broadway and then began tearing their way through the business’ south wall. They then climbed through the hole and tore through another wall to access the phone store’s storage area.

“It was quite an operation,” an officer on-scene said. Police said the crew spent more than 40 minutes in the store.

Officers responded to a call of a burglar alarm at the Sprint store shortly after 5 a.m. on Thursday, but all of the store’s doors and windows were secure, so the cops had no way of knowing that the creative burglary crew was hard at work in the shop’s back room.

Evidence technicians were at the scene Thursday morning, taking photos, hunting for fingerprints, and inventorying a crowbar that had been left behind.

No one is in custody.

Residential Break-Ins Continue

A Lakeview woman was awakened by a burglar who broke a window to her apartment and then tried to climb in around 1:45 a.m. on Thursday. The woman told police that she was sleeping in her bedroom when she heard glass break and saw a male figure trying to climb into her home in the 3300 block of North Seminary.

Arriving officers chased after a man who was seen leaving the area, but they were unable to catch up with him. The chase went westbound on Roscoe and then southbound on Clinton, according to officers who were in the pursuit. The suspect—described as male, black, in his teens—was wearing a red coat with white stripes on the sleeves along with black pants.

On Monday, an Uptown couple was awakened by a burglar who entered their home in the 4400 block of North Dover around 7:50 a.m. The male victim got out of bed in time to see a man running from their basement apartment after kicking in their back door. Nothing was taken.

Area North detectives issued two community alerts yesterday about a series of home burglaries on the North Side.

About CWBChicago 4358 Articles
CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
