Man beaten to death on Loop sidewalk

A 49-year-old man was beaten to death in the Loop on Friday evening, police said. No one is in custody.

Witnesses told police that two intoxicated men began fighting on the sidewalk at 24 East Ida B. Wells Drive after being told to leave a nearby establishment around 9:50 p.m., according to a source.

One of the men, identified as Jack D. Richardson of Decatur, Alabama, fell to the ground and was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital around 10:30 p.m. He had been struck repeatedly with an unknown object, according to the Cook County medical examiner. Richardson’s death was ruled a homicide.

Police said the offender is a black male between 25- and 30-years-old who stands about 5’10” tall and weighs about 155 pounds.
