A robbery and theft crew is approaching victims from behind to steal purses and phones near the Magnificent Mile, according to a community alert from Chicago police. The team struck three times on Saturday and used a gun to threaten one of their victims, police said.

According to the alert, the group consists of up to four black males and one black female, all in their early 20’s who use a silver Ford Escape to flee the scene after each hold-up.

The incidents were reported near State and Chestnut early on Saturday. That afternoon, the team struck in the 900 block of North State and again near State and Oak Streets.

Police are encouraging pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings and to remain calm if they are confronted on the street. Anyone with information about the robbery pattern can contact Area Central detectives at 312-747-8380 regarding pattern P19-1-071.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
