A 61-year-old suburban woman was carjacked early Tuesday as she waited for a family member outside of a Boystown nightclub, according to Chicago police and a witness. The offender, who was wanted for absconding from parole, is in custody.
Police said the victim was sitting in her car in the 3700 block of North Broadway around 2:30 a.m. when a man opened her driver’s side door and pulled her from the vehicle. He then climbed into the silver 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix and sped away southbound on Broadway, according to CPD.
Patrol officers found the vehicle in traffic near Broadway and Clark Street a few minutes later, and a brief pursuit followed. Police said the man was taken into custody after he crashed the stolen car into a light pole outside of Binny’s Beverages Depot at 3000 North Clark.
The offender was treated for minor injuries at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Charges are pending.
A police department source said the man in custody is a 28-year-old who was wanted by the Illinois Department of Corrections for failing to abide by the terms of his parole. State records show the man was released early from prison on Jan. 11th after serving part of a two-year sentence that he received in 2018 for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
CWBChicago will post an updated story with further details after charges are approved.
