Chicago police have launched a death investigation after a severely decomposed body was found in a vehicle in the Uptown neighborhood.

Police were called to the 4500 block of North Marine Drive shortly after 1:30 Wednesday afternoon by a man who reported a foul smell coming from a Chevy van that seemed to be attracting flies.

Investigators forced the van doors open and found a male body in the back of the vehicle surrounded by boxes and what appeared to be personal belongings. Police were unable to determine further details about the man due to his condition, which one officer described as “mummified.”

The van is registered to a man who used an Andersonville UPS Store as a mailing address. A clerk at the store said the man had not picked up his deliveries since December.

Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas.
