A woman was targeted in an attempted criminal sexual assault on the Lakefront Trail near Grant Park late Friday night, police said.

The 27-year-old victim was walking just south of Balbo Drive when an unknown man approached her from behind. Police said she struggled with the man and tried to fight him off with pepper spray. An approaching cyclist scared the attacker, and the assailant fled the scene, allowing the woman to escape and flag down passing patrol officers, CPD said.

The victim described the offender as a black male in his late 20’s with a medium complexion and no facial hair. He stands 5’10” to 6-feet tall, has a thin, athletic build, and was wearing a black jacket with black pants.

Police are advising the public to avoid traveling alone during late night hours and to report any suspicious persons, vehicles or activity in parks.

Anyone with information about Friday’s incident may contact Area Central detectives at 312-747-8380 about case # JC-258411.
