George Barnett | CPD |
Charges have been filed in connection with the shooting of a woman in her Lakeview East apartment building early Saturday.
George Barnett, 31, of Chatham is charged with felony aggravated battery by firearm and misdemeanor aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Judge David Navarro today ordered him held without bail.
Prosecutors said the 29-year-old victim broke up with Barnett earlier in the evening and then went to her home in the 400 block of West Briar with two friends. Shortly before 1 a.m., Barnett showed up at the victim’s apartment, forced his way in, and began threatening his ex-girlfriend with the handgun, according to charges laid out in court on Sunday.
One of the victim’s friends ran to the building’s laundry room and called 911 to report that the woman’s ex-boyfriend was in the building with a gun after being caught cheating.
As police arrived, other residents of the building reported hearing shots fired on the fifth floor.
Officers found Barnett holding a handgun in one of the building’s stairwells, police said. Two shell casings were found in the hallway. Police said Barnett admitted to firing the gun.
The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a minor graze wound to her lower back.
