The black and white video is not very clear. In fact, it’s difficult to make out many details at all. But a Lakeview home’s surveillance camera appears to have captured footage of a parked vehicle in which a 21-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted last weekend.

The woman told police she was raped by a man who was driving a car that she believed was her Uber ride. She fell asleep in the back seat and awoke later to find the offender—described only as a white man—assaulting her as the vehicle sat parked on the 1200 block of West Schubert.

A police spokesperson told CWBChicago in a statement that the offender’s vehicle was “a gray SUV,” but video provided to investigators by a Lakeview homeowner shows the car was actually a light-colored four-door sedan.

The video and additional details of the case were provided to CWBChicago by a person who lives near the assault site. The source asked to remain anonymous.

Black and white footage shows the offender’s vehicle arriving on Schubert at 1:34 a.m. on June 22nd. He backs into a parking space and dims his headlights. After about six minutes, the lights are turned off completely.

About eight minutes after the car parks, another vehicle passes by.  And eight minutes, forty-three seconds into the video, the rear passenger door opens. A figure—believed to be the victim—steps out. The car’s headlights are turned back on and the vehicle moves away westbound on Schubert with the woman left standing in the street.

Our source said the victim’s phone was found dumped near Wrightwood Park, about five blocks from the alleged crime scene. That suggests the offender drove south and west after assaulting the woman. A police spokesperson was unable to immediately verify the source’s information.

Anyone who has additional video or information about the incident may contact Area North investigators at 312-744-8261.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
