Charges are pending against a 25-year-old man who police say is responsible for a head-on collision Thursday morning along Boystown’s Halsted Street bar strip.

The man was driving southbound on the 3500 block of North Halsted at a high rate of speed around 2:15 a.m. when he swerved into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a vehicle that was traveling northbound, police said.

A witness told CWBChicago that he saw the man’s car traveling at “highway speed” before the crash.

Police said the front end of the man’s vehicle caught fire and bounced into an unoccupied parked car.

The man was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where his condition was stabilized while under police guard. The driver of the northbound vehicle was also stabilized at Masonic, police said.

Snapchat video taken moments after the crash shows an eerily quiet scene with smoke billowing from cars. CWBChicago will post an update when charges are approved.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
