A 27-year-old woman was attacked and sexually assaulted after chasing a phone thief into a  Millennium Park stairwell early Tuesday, according to police and a source. No one is in custody.

The woman was on the Blue Line platform at Dearborn and Washington around 3:30 a.m. when the offender took her phone out of her hands and ran, police said. She chased the offender to the 100 block of East Randolph where she continued to pursue him down a staircase on the northwest corner of Millennium Park, the source said.

A source said the stairwell comes to a dead-end where the man physically attacked the victim and sexually assaulted her. He then left the area on foot. Evidence technicians recovered a condom from the scene.

The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where her condition has been stabilized.

Area Central Detectives were working to secure CTA surveillance Tuesday morning. The offender was described as a black man with dreadlocks who stands about 5’9” tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He was wearing a baseball hat and a name tag that said, “Ford.” The victim said he was last seen heading westbound on Wacker Drive.
