A man is dead after an apparent drive-by shooting in the Rogers Park neighborhood overnight, police said. No one is in custody.
Someone fired shots at the 47-year-old victim as he stood on the southeast corner of Ashland Avenue and Jonquil Terrace around 2:10 a.m., according to a CPD statement and police records. The man made his way to the courtyard of a nearby apartment building, where he collapsed and cried for help.

A resident of the building dialed 911 for the man and police found him around 2:20 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his chest. An ambulance crew transported him to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where doctors later pronounced him dead. The courtyard and the apparent shooting scene lie directly across Ashland Avenue from Gale Elementary Community Academy.
Police said in a statement that the gunman may have been in a black SUV that drove past the victim at the time of the shooting. Neighbors reported hearing about seven shots.
In a statement overnight, CPD said the victim is “known” to the department.
Area North detectives are investigating.
