An Edgewater woman is being held without bail after prosecutors accused her of violently slamming her two-month-old daughter onto their apartment floor because the infant reminded her of the baby’s father. The little girl may not survive, according to statements made in court.
Nina Singleton, 31, is charged with Class X felony aggravated battery of a child causing permanent disability and misdemeanor child endangerment.
On Nov. 20, Singleton grabbed the infant by both legs, lifted the girl over her head while standing, and slammed the girl to a hard floor, prosecutors said in a felony complaint. Singleton is additionally accused of failing to seek treatment for the girl’s injuries.
Police arrested Singleton at her home on the 1000 block of West Bryn Mawr early on Nov. 27 after the girl’s father found the child unresponsive during a visit to her apartment.
Doctors said the massive injuries to the child’s head and face may have occurred around the time that her father discovered her, not on Nov. 20 as Singleton allegedly stated.
The baby is now on life support at Lurie Children’s Hospital, where doctors determined that she has multiple facial and skull fractures, brain hemorrhages, and “large area ischemia,” a condition that stems from a lack of blood to the brain, according to court records.
Prosecutors said the girl also has broken bones in her leg and shoulder that may be the result of separate attacks by Singleton.
The state will file murder charges if the girl dies, according to statements made in court.
Singleton has no criminal history in Cook County.
