A man is in critical condition after being shot multiple times early Sunday in the River North neighborhood, police said. No one is in custody.
Police said in a media statement that the victim, who’s in his early 30’s, was inside a car “when an unknown offender fired multiple shots into the vehicle” on the 600 block of North Wells around 4:40 a.m.
The victim drove himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
“The circumstances of the shooting incident are unknown,” the media statement said.
CWBChicago has learned more information through established sources.
Police officers who responded to multiple 911 calls of shots fired near Ontario and Wells at 4:42 a.m. found nine spent shell casings at the scene.
Witnesses reported that occupants of a black Mercedes and occupants of another vehicle fired shots at each other and then sped off in different directions.
Police impounded the shooting victim’s car, a black Mercedes with multiple bullet holes, at Northwestern.
According to initial information, the victim suffered gunshot wounds to his chest, pelvis, left arm, hip, and armpit.
Area Central detectives are investigating.
Sunday’s victim is the eighth person shot in River North during 2019. Two of those victims have died: Sound-Bar bouncer Thurman Bailey on Mar. 8 and off-duty Chicago Police Officer John Rivera on Mar. 23.
