A man is dead after being shot inside the Howard CTA station on Tuesday afternoon. A suspect is being questioned, according to a source.

Chicago police said in a media statement that an unknown offender shot the man in the chest and neck as he stood on the Red Line platform. A source identified the victim as 20-year-old Mack Webb of the 1500 block of West Jonquil Terrace in Rogers Park.

Officers on routine patrol reported a chaotic scene as people ran out of the station at 12:21 p.m., even before the first 911 calls were made.

Witnesses said Webb and another man ran into the station, and the second man shot Webb as he ran up to the platform. Shell casings were found in the station’s vestibule at ground level.

The gunman, initially described as a black man wearing black pants, a black hoodie and a black backpack with a large Puma logo, was last seen running out of the CTA station. Police said the shooter was last seen running northbound on Paulina.

Police searched the area and detained a man matching the gunman’s description inside a nearby grocery store, according to the source. A backpack and a firearm were recovered, the source said.

An ambulance transported Webb to St. Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:07 p.m.

Area North detectives are investigating.
