Chicago police, the Cook County Sheriff, and the county’s chief judge this evening each released details of new COVID-19 outbreaks within their operations:
Chicago Police Department
CPD said three more officers have tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases within the department to nine. The new cases involve a detective and two patrol officers. At least two of the new cases work in the department’s 1st District, according to a department source. Officers assigned to that district patrol areas including the Loop, South Loop, and Grant Park.
Cook County Jail (Sheriff’s Office)
Sheriff Tom Dart’s office tonight announced that 50 jail detainees have been tested for COVID-19 after they exhibited flu-like symptoms. Of those, 17 detainees tested positive, two tested negative, and 31 tests are pending, the sheriff’s office said.
Also, four jail corrections officers and one member of the sheriff’s police force have tested positive as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, the office reported.
Detainees living in the areas where infected detainees were housed will be monitored and tests will be administered to any who show symptoms, according to the sheriff’s announcement.
Court System
An adult probation worker and an employee who works in the office of Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a memo from Evans to fellow judges and court employees. CWBChicago obtained a copy of the memo from a source.
The probation employee worked in the lower level of the courthouse at 26th and California where, among other things, felony cases and the daily bond court is held, according to Evans.
The other person works in Evans’ offices on the 23rd floor of the Daley Center, he said.
Both individuals last reported for work on Mar. 13. And they both said they did not experience any symptoms while at work, Evans said. The court’s human resources office is identifying individuals who may have come into contact with the two workers.
