Man found dead in Old Town apartment building

Update 7:29PM May 26 —  The Cook County medical examiner’s office today ruled the man’s death to be natural.

Police are conducting a death investigation after a man was found dead in an Old Town apartment building Monday afternoon.

Fire department personnel summoned police when they noticed suspicious circumstances involving a “person down” at the former Carling Hotel, 1521 North LaSalle, around 2:20 p.m.

Police said the man was found face down in a hallway with blunt force trauma to his head. CPD initially estimated the man was in his 30’s or 40’s, but another source said the man was 63-years-old. An autopsy is planned.

The Carling, a former SRO, underwent a $27.4 million renovation and re-opened as affordable housing in 2018.
