One dead, second injured during altercation on Bucktown street

One man is dead, another injured after gang members opened fire on them Saturday evening in Bucktown. No arrests have been made.

The victims, ages 23 and 24, were in the 1900 block of North Western around 6:58 p.m. when a group of men began yelling gang slogans and asking what gang they are affiliated with, police said.

A physical fight ensued and one of the offenders pulled out a gun and began firing, according to police. The younger victim died at the scene from a gunshot wound to his neck. The other man was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to his arm.

Officials said neither of the victims appear to have had previous contact with Chicago police.

Witnesses said the three offenders appeared to have Puerto Rican flags wrapped around their bodies. Two ran toward Milwaukee Avenue on Western while another ran west on Homer Street.

Police found a handgun hidden in an alley behind the 1900 block of North Milwaukee about 20 minutes after the shooting.

Area 5 detectives are investigating.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
