A Lakeview man was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound during a police SWAT incident Sunday evening, according to police.

Officers responded to an apartment building on the 500 block of West Aldine around 5:35 p.m. after a suicide hotline worker notified authorities about a man who was in distress at the scene.

The man, age 38, did not open his apartment door when police knocked, so fire department personnel began to force the door open, according to an officer at the scene. Police reportedly heard two gunshots inside the apartment as firemen cracked the door.

CPD supervisors called for a SWAT response shortly after 6 p.m., bringing a large number of police support units to the area.

SWAT officers entered the man’s apartment around 7:25 p.m. and found him dead in a closet, according to a source. A note was recovered from the scene.
