Well, this is a new one.
Chicago police just issued a community alert to warn North Side stores about a man who is stealing unattended cash registers. The thief, who struck four times last week in Lakeview and Uptown, has mostly targeted Walgreens stores.
According to police, he enters the stores during business hours and waits for the cashiers to leave a register unattended. Then, he reaches over the counter and removes the lower half of the register where the cash is held, police said.
He took registers from:
- Walmart Neighborhood Market, 2844 North Broadway, at 8:05 p.m. August 23
- Walgreens, 3046 North Halsted, at 9:27 p.m. August 26
- Walgreens, 740 West Diversey, at 9:40 p.m. August 26
- Walgreens, 4720 North Marine, at 10 p.m. August 28
Police said the suspect is a Black male between 20- and 25-years-old who has short hair, weighs about 150 pounds, and wears dark clothing.
Detectives encouraged business owners to inform employees about the man and to ensure that all unattended cash registers are fully secured.
