Gold Coast: 2 dead in fiery car crash on Lake Shore Drive

This story was updated with new information from police at 7:48 p.m.

Two men have died after their vehicle crashed and burst into flames on Lake Shore Drive near Oak Street around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Their car was traveling northbound on the 1000 block of North Lake Shore when it crashed on the S-curve. Police said in a statement the driver lost control and the car “hit a gas line which caused the car to catch fire.”

A witness reported seeing the car traveling at a high speed, rake along a concrete barrier, and burst into flames. A trail of burning fuel followed behind the car atop the barrier, he said.

Both men got out of the vehicle and were able to get into a passing car, which transported them to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to a witness. The victims were transferred to Stroger Hospital for treatment of burns to their bodies, police said. Both later died, according to police.

A loaded handgun was found near the burning car, police said. The crash remains under investigation.
