A 19-year-old woman was shot in the head as she rode in a vehicle on Lake Shore Drive near Grant Park on Sunday afternoon, police said. No one is in custody. Police said the shooting does not appear to be random and there may be a “connection” between the involved parties.
The victim was stopped for a red light in the northbound lanes at Jackson when someone pulled alongside her car at 1:20 p.m. According to police, a gunman began shooting at her vehicle from the other car’s back seat after the occupants of the cars engaged in a brief conversation.
The woman’s vehicle sped north, exited at Grand Avenue, and came to a stop outside of Navy Pier. Police officers administered first aid to stem the woman’s blood loss until fire personnel arrived, CPD said. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Police found shell casings at the shooting scene. A person who was briefly detained for questioning was later released after police determined that he was not involved in the incident, according to CPD.
The woman is the 14th person to be shot in the Loop this year. Only three people were shot in the Loop during all of last year.
