A 22-year-old woman was carjacked at gunpoint while she Facetimed with a friend in Edgewater on Monday evening. It’s the latest in a series of armed robberies and armed carjackings that have swept through the neighborhood over the past few days.
The woman was parked in the 900 block of West Granville when an armed man interrupted her Facetime conversation to announce a carjacking around 7:50 p.m., according to a CPD report.
Police said the offender opened the woman’s door, demanded her property, and ordered her out of the car. He then climbed into the driver’s seat and sped away with her white 2007 Lexus RX350.
The woman’s friend saw the carjacking unfold via Facetime and immediately called 911 to report the crime. She said she heard the gunman order her friend out of her car.
Police searched the area for the victim’s car and the carjacker, but they came up empty-handed. The offender is described as a Black male in his 20’s who wore a black sweatshirt with white writing on the front.
On Friday, a group of carjackers hijacked two vehicles on the 1200 block of West Thorndale around 11:38 p.m., according to police.
As the carjackers started to drive away with the first victim’s car, they saw a BMW X5 in traffic and decided to get out and take that one at gunpoint instead. The next night, two food delivery drivers were robbed at gunpoint by a group of armed men that police linked to Friday’s incidents.
Area Three detectives are investigating all of the robberies and hijackings.
