16-year-old charged with armed carjacking in West Loop

A 16-year-old girl is charged with carjacking a woman at gunpoint in the West Loop on Monday evening, police said.

The victim, 52, told police that two women confronted her with a handgun as she got out of her car on the first block of North Aberdeen around 5:56 p.m., CPD spokesperson Kellie Bartoli said. She surrendered control of her Toyota RAV4 to the women, who drove away southbound.

Police surveillance equipment later detected the car’s license plate on the West Side. Patrol officers found it traveling in traffic on the 4000 block of West Carroll in Garfield Park and pulled it over around 7:53 p.m.

The 16-year-old ran from the car but was arrested after a short foot chase, police said.

Prosecutors charged the girl with aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm. She is scheduled to appear in juvenile court today.
