Update June 29 — While CPD has repeatedly referred to the Mariano’s stabbing victim as a 49-year-old woman, he is, in fact, a man who works as a DJ in the store’s bar area.
A woman has stabbed three people at random and threatened to shoot a fourth person in a series of attacks on the North Side, according to a community alert from Chicago police.
CWBChicago has learned exclusively that the woman threatened to shoot one of the victims because he is Asian and at least one of the stabbing victims is also an Asian man. Police did not mention any motive in the alert, nor did CPD mention any pattern of Asians being targeted.
Here’s what we know:
Police have linked a recent stabbing inside a Lakeview grocery store, a random stabbing near the Thorndale Red Line station, and two other incidents in Uptown to one suspect. According to the alert, victims have been targeted “for no apparent reason.”
- At 8:45 p.m. on June 5, a woman wearing a pink top attacked a 24-year-old Asian man from behind as he walked with his girlfriend on the 1000 block of West Thorndale, according to a CPD report. Then, she ran away. The victim was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment.
- Around 4:40 p.m. on June 9, a woman wearing a pink top and jeans implied she had a gun and threatened to shoot a man because he is Asian on the 4800 block of North Broadway, a CPD report said. The man was not injured.
- At 4:25 pm. on June 11, a woman wearing a pink top stabbed an employee inside the Lakeview East Mariano’s grocery store, 3030 North Broadway. Police said the victim was female, but witnesses said the victim appeared to be a man. No motive was given for the attack, and the victim’s racial background is not known.
- A fourth victim was stabbed in an apparently random attack on the 4800 block of North Marine Drive around 10:45 a.m. on June 5, according to the CPD alert. No further information was available about the incident or the victim.
Police said the attacker is a Black woman who stands 5’6″ to 5’8″ tall. She wore a pink top in three of the incidents, police said. CWB has learned that the June 9 victim said the woman had very short hair.
