SWAT response, but no arrests after pregnant woman is shot inside Loop hotel

CPD SWAT officers responded to a Loop hotel after a woman emerged from an elevator with a gunshot wound to her leg on Sunday afternoon. But officers began leaving the scene shortly before 4 p.m., and a police spokesperson said no one had been arrested.

Police initially responded to the Club Quarters Central Loop Hotel, 111 West Adams, after a 24-year-old pregnant woman stepped off an elevator at lobby level with a gunshot wound to her right thigh, according to a CPD statement.

Officers applied a tourniquet to slow her blood loss until EMS arrived. Other cops went to the woman’s room on the fifth floor. SWAT was summoned because no one answered the door, and police believed someone was inside.

But CPD units cleared the room a little before 4 p.m. Officers found blood and multiple handguns inside the hotel room, but no one was arrested, according to a police report. When asked if police were seeking an offender, the CPD spokesperson only said, “Area Three detectives are investigating.”

The woman’s condition was stabilized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

She is the sixth person shot in the Loop this month and the 12th shooting victim of the year. By comparison, six people had been shot in the Loop at this point last year, which was a very high number. In 2019, the Loop recorded just three shooting victims total. Among recent incidents:

  • On June 3, a 15-year-old girl was critically wounded when someone opened fire on her truck as she drove with her family on the 500 block of South Lake Shore Drive.
  • On June 6, two people were injured during a shootout on the corner of Wacker and Wabash.
  • On June 12, a man was shot 14 times in a hail of automatic gunfire on the 600 block of South Wells. More than 60 rounds were fired, according to a CPD report.
  • On June 13, a man was shot during a dispute with a security guard at DuSable Harbor. More more than 35 rounds were fired during the incident, authorities said.

In addition to the shootings, a 31-year-old Maryland woman was fatally stabbed Saturday afternoon when an apparently homeless man attacked her in the 400 block of South Wacker.
