Update: Police release video of woman sought in Lakeview Mariano’s stabbing

Update June 29 — While CPD has repeatedly referred to the Mariano’s stabbing victim as a 49-year-old woman, he is, in fact, a man who works as a DJ in the store’s bar area.

Detectives released a short video clip of a woman running from a Lakeview Mariano’s store after allegedly stabbing an employee earlier this month. Police previously released still images from the video in a community alert that linked the woman to three other apparently random attacks across the North and Far North Sides.

The brief video clip shows the woman running from the bar area, past an elevator bank, and turning to exit the store’s front door at 3030 North Broadway around 4:05 p.m. on June 11. Police did not release any new information with the video clip.

Shortly after the stabbing, CPD issued a statement saying the 49-year-old victim and offender began arguing when the offender pulled out a “sharp object” and stabbed the woman. The victim, who was stabbed twice in her lower back and once in her left arm, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.

Witnesses said the attacker fled north on Broadway then west on Barry Avenue after the stabbing. She is described as a thin Black woman standing about 5’7″ tall who wore a purple shirt with a blue COVID mask and carried a blue bag.

Less than a week after the incident, police issued screen grabs from the video and linked the woman to three other attacks during June. Two of those cases involve apparently random stabbings, and the third involved a woman who threatened to shoot a man while making anti-Asian statements, according to a CPD report. One of the earlier stabbing victims is also Asian, CPD records show. Police have not mentioned any motive for the attacks, nor did CPD mention any pattern of Asians being targeted.

  • At 8:45 p.m. on June 5, a woman wearing a pink top attacked a 24-year-old Asian man from behind as he walked with his girlfriend on the 1000 block of West Thorndale, according to a CPD report. Then, she ran away. The victim was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment.
  • Around 4:40 p.m. on June 9, a woman wearing a pink top and jeans implied she had a gun and threatened to shoot a man because he is Asian on the 4800 block of North Broadway, a CPD report said. The man was not injured.
  • A victim was stabbed in an apparently random attack on the 4800 block of North Marine Drive around 10:45 a.m. on June 5, according to the CPD alert. No further information was available about the incident or the victim.

Police said the attacker is a Black woman who stands 5’6″ to 5’8″ tall. She wore a pink top in three of the incidents, police said. CWB has learned that the June 9 victim said the woman had very short hair.
