Wicker Park drive-by leaves 1 dead, 4 injured on Milwaukee Avenue bar strip

An exchange of gunfire left one man dead and four others injured along the Milwaukee Avenue nightlife strip in Wicker Park early Sunday, according to witnesses and police.

The area was buzzing with revelers when someone fired shots from a dark-colored sedan that rolled south on the 1500 block of North Milwaukee Avenue around 3:42 a.m. Witnesses said a large group was standing outside a bar when the shots rang out, and another man returned fire. Some said the gunman’s car was a Honda Civic that headed south.

Chicago police officers applied tourniquets to help slow two of the victims’ blood loss.

Police said a 32-year-old man died from a gunshot wound to his chest. The other victims are a 30-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg, a 22-year-old woman who was shot in the leg, a 25-year-old woman who was shot in her back, and a 25-year-old woman who was shot in her leg, police said. All of the surviving victims were stabilized at local hospitals, according to a CPD statement.

The statement did not include any descriptions of the gunmen.

Area Five detectives are investigating.
