2 carjackings, 2 street robberies reported on Far North Side

Chicago police are investigating two armed carjackings and two robberies reported late Wednesday and early Thursday between Uptown and Rogers Park. No arrests have been announced.

The first carjacking unfolded on the 6600 block of North Newgard in Rogers Park around 11 p.m. A 33-year-old woman told police that two men confronted her with a handgun and took her phone and 2014 Honda Civic, according to a CPD report. The report said the offenders are two Black males in their 20s who wore dark clothing and stood between 5’8″ and 6-feet tall.

Then, around 1:45 a.m. Thursday, a hijacker displayed a gun and took a man’s BMW 300-series rental car on the 5700 block of North Broadway in Edgewater, according to a separate report. The gunman was accompanied by a white vehicle that raised suspicions among police that the crime may be linked to the earlier incident on Newgard.

The Edgewater victim said the primary offender is a Black male who wore a black hoodie with light-colored sweats, according to a CPD report. The suspect stood about 5’11” tall and weighed about 170 pounds.

One of the two street robberies was particularly violent. The victim was taken to Weiss Hospital for treatment after an offender hit him in the face with a metal pipe during a robbery early Thursday, according to a CPD report. Doctors used staples and stitches to close the man’s wounds.

He told police that he had just left the Argyle Red Line station when a man wearing a black top with gold sleeves attacked him and took his wallet.

Another robbery was reported around 9 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Berwyn and Paulina in Andersonville. A woman told police that a man displayed a gun and took her phone and wallet, then fled with a second man who was standing nearby. The main offender was a heavyset Black male with dreads who is between 18- and 30-years-old and stands about 6-feet tall. No description was available for the second man except that he appeared skinny.

The robberies and carjackings came amidst a particularly violent night on the North Side. At least 14 people were targeted by armed robbery crews that struck repeatedly in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and Uptown between roughly 10 p.m. and midnight.
