Suspect in custody after “innocent bystander” is shot outside Old Town grocery store

Detectives are questioning a suspect after a man was shot in an alley behind an Old Town grocery store on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the victim, 32, was shot by another man during an argument in an alley behind the 100 block of West Division at 4:24 p.m. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to his lower back, according to CPD.

Officers identified a suspect and took him into custody around 5:30 p.m. inside a condo building on the 1200 block of North LaSalle, where he is listed as a resident.

“An offender who was previously banned from the 2nd-floor bar at Jewel, 102 W Division, returned and shot an innocent bystander in the back,” Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) tweeted Sunday night. “The shooter fled but was taken into custody minutes later by 18th district officers. Great job by @ChicagoCAPS18 to neutralize an armed threat.”

Area Three detectives are handling the case.
