Suspect arrested after Uber driver is hijacked in Lakeview

Charges are pending against a man suspected of carjacking an Uber driver in Lakeview on Wednesday afternoon. The same man likely tried to carjack another victim in nearby Lincoln Park just a few minutes earlier, according to a CPD report.

Separately, a pizza delivery driver was hijacked in Lakeview on Monday night. And, in another dash of good news, CPD announced charges in a year-old hijacking of a senior citizen near Wrigleyville. Here are the details:

Wednesday hijacking and arrest

A 69-year-old Uber driver was driving his black Volkswagen sedan on the 1800 block of West Diversey when a hijacker ordered him out of the car at gunpoint around 11:21 a.m., a CPD spokesperson said. The victim complied, and the carjacker drove away with the vehicle.

Police found a blue-gray Volvo abandoned at the scene. The Volvo was used just minutes earlier by a man who tried to carjack another driver outside a convenience store on the 2100 block of North Clybourn, according to a CPD report. That hijacking failed.

Illinois State Police troopers located the Uber driver’s car in traffic near Joliet and took the suspected carjacker into custody after a vehicle pursuit and foot chase on Wednesday afternoon. We will post an updated story when charges are approved.

Pizza driver carjacked

A Monday evening pizza delivery took a nasty turn on the 1600 block of West Cornelia. Four men confronted the food runner, and one of the offenders put a gun to his head while demanding his phone and car keys, according to a CPD spokesperson. The group drove away with his blue Chevy Equinox. A nearby resident’s security camera recorded the hijacking.

The spokesperson said that all four suspects were slim Black males between 15- and 20-years-old who wore black clothing with black ski masks. The gunman was 6’1″ to 6’3″ tall and wore white Air Force 1 shoes, while the others stood 5’9″ to 5’10” tall. Police were investigating a lead that the men arrived in the area via the Brown Line.

60 year age gap

Police arrested a 17-year-old boy in the 1500 block of South Drake on Tuesday to face charges for hijacking a 77-year-old woman in Lakeview one year ago, according to a CPD statement. He is charged with felony aggravated vehicular hijacking of a person over the age of 60. No further information is available about him or the circumstances of his arrest because he is a juvenile.

CWB reported last year that the woman was walking to her 2015 Audi when a hijacker confronted her, implied that he had a gun, and demanded her car keys around 3:40 p.m. on February 12.
