2 seniors found dead in Uptown apartment; double-murder investigation launched

Update April 11, 2022, at 8:16 a.m. — The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victims as Ocie Banks, Sr.of Berwyn, and Sheila Banks, who lived in the apartment where the bodies were found. Autopsies are scheduled for today.

Update April 11, 2021, at 4:21 p.m. — According to the medical examiner’s office, Sheila Banks died from a gunshot wound to the head. and Ocie Banks, Sr. died from multiple gunshot wounds.


Police are investigating a suspected double-homicide after they found two people dead in an apartment at the Wilson Yard Senior Housing complex, 1032 West Montrose, in Uptown.

Officers responding to a well-being check found a 79-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman dead in their bedroom around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a Chicago police statement. The man showed signs of facial trauma and the woman appeared to have a gunshot wound to her head.

Cops went to the complex after a man who identified himself as the woman’s son became concerned that she had not answered the phone, a CPD report said. A maintenance worker gave police access to the apartment, according to a police statement.

The victims have the same last name, but their relationship could not be immediately confirmed.
