Driver carjacked in Lakeview on Saturday afternoon as hijackings set a record pace in the area

Two armed men carjacked a driver in Lakeview on Saturday afternoon, marking the 16th hijacking in the neighborhood this year. That’s more carjackings than the neighborhood saw at this point in 2018 to 2021 combined.

The victim told police that both men displayed handguns and took his silver 2020 Lexus SUV on the 1400 block of West Cuyler around 1:05 p.m.

He described the hijackers as Black males between 20- and 28-years-old who wore black masks. Another man driving a gray Jeep Cherokee reportedly followed them west on Cuyler.

There were 15 hijackings reported in Lakeview between January 1 and May 20. That’s up from six during the same time last year, two at this point in 2020 and 2019, and three as of May 20, 2018.

Citywide, police took 621 carjacking reports this year as of May 20, up from 599 at the same time last year. By comparison, there were 302 during the period in 2020 and 183 in 2019, according to the city’s data portal.
