Three people were robbed in about 20 minutes overnight in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Police are also investigating at least one armed robbery that occurred in Lakeview on Wednesday evening.
All three Rogers Park crimes involve masked men who emerged from a dark blue car to mug women on the street.
In the first robbery, a man knocked a woman to the ground on the 6700 block of North Greenview and took her purse. A similar robbery happened around the same time on the 6800 block of North Wolcott.
And, at 12:20 a.m., a 40-year-old woman was mugged as she walked with a 28-year-old friend on the 1500 block of West Morse, according to a CPD spokesperson. Two robbers stepped out of a blue sedan, and the man and woman tried to run away. But one of the offenders grabbed the woman, punched her in the neck, and pulled her bag away, police said.
The victims described the suspects as Black males wearing black masks who traveled in a blue Chrysler or Subaru.
In Lakeview, two 18-year-old men were robbed at gunpoint by two men who exited a silver SUV on the 2000 block of West Barry around 10:20 p.m. Neither victim was injured, police said.
Police at the scene described the robbers as Black men in their 20s, at least one of whom had dreadlocks. They had more than one gun, one of which was equipped with a red laser sight. According to a source, their car is believed to be a 2013 Ford with Indiana license plates. It was stolen over the weekend on the 900 block of West Roscoe in Lakeview.
Also in Lakeview last night, several witnesses called 911 around 10:15 p.m. to report that a man had been beaten and robbed by four men who emerged from a gray SUV on the 3000 block of North Southport.
Some witnesses said the victim was on the ground, bleeding, but police could not find the man when they arrived at the scene. A CPD spokesperson said no robbery report had been filed from the Southport location as of Thursday morning.
Waves of robberies have been reported across the city during late night and overnight hours this week. At least 12 people were robbed early Wednesday. Others were targeted in a string of crimes Tuesday.
Robbery cases are up 21% across Chicago this year as of June 19, according to CPD statistical reports. The category is up 13% compared to 2020 and 8% compared to 2019. Compared to 2018, robberies are down 15%, police data shows.
