Woman shot in River North during possible robbery attempt overnight

A 21-year-old woman was shot while sitting in a car in River North overnight. Police are investigating statements from the car’s driver that the shooting happened during a robbery or carjacking attempt.

At least two other hijackings or hijacking attempts were reported in River North and the Loop overnight.

The woman was sitting in the passenger seat of a black Dodge Challenger that was parked on the 100 block of West Illinois around 4:30 a.m., according to a CPD statement. A gunman approached the driver’s window and displayed a gun, prompting her driver to pull a U-turn and speed away, police said.

As the car was leaving, the gunman fired shots, striking the woman in both legs. The driver took her to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where the woman was admitted in serious condition.

Police found several shell casings on the 100 block of West Illinois. Witnesses gave varying descriptions of cars and people who were seen leaving the area after shots were fired.

The woman is the 13th person shot in River North so far this year. The neighborhood had seven shooting victims at this point last year and only one as of June 18, 2020.
