Loop shooting leaves man dead on his 40th birthday; second victim injured

A gunman left one man dead and another injured in the Loop early Sunday. Chicago police said the victims were walking in the 200 block of South Wabash when they got involved in an argument with the gunman, who took out a gun and shot them around 12:05 a.m.

A man who turned 40 years old at midnight today was shot in the back and shoulder. He was later pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The other victim, age 37, was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to his shoulder and stomach.

Police said the shooter fled south on Wabash wearing a white hat and a white shirt. He was carrying a black crossbody bag and was with a woman who was dressed in pink clothing.

This morning’s victims are the 29th and 30th persons shot in the Loop this year. Six of the victims have died. By comparison, there were 21 shooting victims in the Loop at this point last year and 12 as of September 4, 2020. The Loop had a total of four shooting victims for the entire year of 2019.
