A security guard was shot while walking in the Edgewater neighborhood overnight, Chicago police said. Detectives are talking with a suspect.
Police said the 39-year-old was walking in the 1000 block of West Catalpa when someone fired shots from a dark-colored sedan around 12:06 a.m. One bullet grazed the guard’s left calf. EMS took him to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.
Officers found a car similar to the gunman’s nearby, conducted a traffic stop, and recovered a firearm from one of the vehicle’s occupants. A source said officers also recovered a shell casing during the stop.
This morning’s victim is the 10th person shot in Edgewater this year, the highest year-to-date number since at least 2016. Here are the number of shooting victims in Edgewater as of September 30 annually, according to city of Chicago data:
