Hammer-wielding men rob pedestrian in Humboldt Park (Video)

Chicago — Newly released video shows two men armed themselves with hammers to rob another man in Humboldt Park over the weekend. The neighborhood is among the areas of Chicago that have been slammed by more than 70 armed robberies since December 2.

“There was a robbery this weekend that I caught on our cameras,” a CWBChicago reader said Monday. “I reported it to CPD, but there was zero interest in the footage. They basically shrugged it off.”

We confirmed that the victim filed a Chicago police report within minutes of the holdup, which occurred at 4:32 am. Sunday on the corner of Division and Spaulding. He told officers that two men armed with hammers got out of a vehicle and robbed him of his phone, according to a CPD report.

The robbers in the video have different appearances and a different method of operation than the armed crews that racked up scores of armed robberies across the city between West Town and Rogers Park this month.

Investigators believe one of the prolific crews was taken out by a concealed carry holder last week. Another may be in custody after a fiery car crash on the North Side yesterday.

On Monday evening, CPD released a community alert listing 50 robberies reported in just three days that detectives believe one team of offenders committed.

But investigators are aware of dozens of additional robberies that occurred in the days before and after the dates listed, a source said. CPD’s alert said the crews primarily responsible for the waves of near-daily robberies consist of between two and four Black males between 15 and 30 years old. They typically wear ski masks and hoodies, display guns, and travel in stolen Hyundais and Kias. The cars often have broken rear side windows.
