Locked inside Uptown jewelry store, robber escaped by firing a shot through the front window, police say

Chicago — An Uptown jewelry store robber shot out the store’s front window because he couldn’t get the door to open as he tried to make his escape on Wednesday afternoon, according to Chicago police.

The man entered Heng Heng Jewelry, 1058 West Argyle, around 2:30 p.m. and asked to see a gold chain, the police report said. He then tried to walk out with the jewelry without paying for it.

But the front door would not open, so he pulled out a gun and fired a bullet through the front window, causing the glass to shatter, police said. He then stepped through the window frame and fled the scene, according to an officer at the scene.

No one was injured during the incident, police said.

Surveillance video shows the man to be Hispanic and in his early 30s. He wore a black jacket over a gray hoodie and was last seen heading west on Arygle.
