Lyft driver killed, passenger wounded in Little Italy drive-by, Chicago police say

Chicago — An Lyft driver was shot and killed in Little Italy on Monday evening by a carload of drive-by gunmen who were likely targeting his passenger, according to a Chicago police source. The passenger was also wounded but is expected to survive.

The rideshare driver, 31, picked up his 34-year-old passenger in the 1300 block of South Morgan around 9 p.m., and the passenger quickly realized that a carload of masked men was trailing them in a silver SUV, the source said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the driver as Milton Pillacela Ayora of Humboldt Park.

When they reached the 1000 block of West Roosevelt, the four masked men in the silver SUV pulled up next to the victims and began firing.

The driver suffered gunshot wounds to his torso and subsequently died, police said. His passenger was shot in the thigh and calf. He is in fair condition at Stroger Hospital.

Witnesses said police evidence technicians were examining the rideshare driver’s Acura, riddled with bullet holes, which stopped outside St. Ignatius College Prep.

In a media statement, CPD said the rideshare passenger “is known to police.”
