UPDATE 8:37AM: Chicago police have announced charges against Frank Redd, 26, of Madison, Wisconsin, in connection with the DePaul incidents. He is charged with two counts of unlawful restraint, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and misdemeanor theft. We will post a full update after he appears for a bond hearing Friday afternoon.
CHICAGO — A man is in custody for a series of incidents on DePaul University’s Lincoln Campus on Thursday afternoon, according to an email from the school to its community members.
The school’s message said it began around 4 p.m. when the man attacked a student inside a restroom at the Schmitt Academic Center, 2320 North Kenmore. The student “scared off the offender and was able to use the duress button in the bathroom,” according to the email.
While DePaul security officers spoke with that victim, they learned of a second attack inside a school parking garage in the 2300 block of North Sheffield.
Chicago police said a 22-year-old woman accidentally struck another car while leaving a parking space, and a man emerged from the other car. He entered the woman’s vehicle, lunged at her and squeezed her neck, then fled when the woman screamed, a CPD spokesperson said.
She refused medical attention but did have redness on her neck, according to police.
DePaul said the same man from those two incidents then took a backpack from the school’s Student Center, 2250 North Sheffield.
The man was subsequently taken into custody, the school said.
