1 dead, 1 injured in South Loop shooting

CHICAGO — Two 18-year-old men were shot, one fatally, as they sat in a car in the South Loop on Thursday afternoon, Chicago police said.

They were sitting inside a Jeep in the 1900 block of South State when a stolen white Kia rolled up to them around 3:31 p.m., according to a CPD media statement. Someone inside the Kia fired shots at them.

Chicago police officers found the Kia abandoned near Cermak Road and State Street a few minutes later.

After the shooting, the victim’s SUV was found near Chase Bank, 1934 South State. | Google

A witness saw four males run from the Kia, and early indications are they escaped the area on a CTA train, according to an officer at the scene.

The victim seated in the Jeep’s driver’s seat suffered gunshot wounds throughout his body and died at Stroger Hospital, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Cameron Rayford. A passenger in the Jeep received a graze wound to the hand. He was in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
