Girl, 2, accidentally shot herself in Rogers Park, police say

A 2-year-old girl shot herself in the hand after finding a firearm inside a Rogers Park apartment on Sunday afternoon, according to initial information from Chicago police.

The girl was inside an apartment in the 1500 block of West Jonquil when she managed to locate a gun and fire it around 6:15 p.m., police said. She was taken to St. Francis Hospital in good condition.

Investigators found a gun inside a purse in the apartment. They are now working to determine if the adult responsible for the weapon is properly licensed.

Not counting the toddler, fourteen people have been shot in Rogers Park this year, up from 12 victims at this point last year. A medical examiner ruling is still pending in one of this year’s cases. One of last year’s shootings was determined to be self-defense.

Rogers Park had ten shooting victims as of this date in 2021, according to city records.
